IN THIS ISSUEPAINT IT BLACKWhen The Rolling Stones released Paint It, Black as a single in May 1966 in the wake of their fourth British studio album, Aftermath , they confirmed a darkening of the mood in ’60s pop music. Literary, lyrical nihilism was matched with musical textures that were equally brooding and ambitious, continuing the transformation of music from entertainment into social commentary. The Stones were not alone in their restlessness. Stateside standard-bearers such as The Doors were already fine-tuning the approach that would grace their incendiary first album a year later, while cities like San Francisco, Detroit and Austin would birth further creativity and unrest. In the UK, meanwhile, the psychedelic undercurrents would ultimately lead to a period of increasing musical heaviness. This 15-track collection reflects that fecund period from ’66 onwards.…7 min
